WWDC 2024 is coming. You are excited and we are excited to see what big announcements Apple is planning to make. We reported previously that iOS 18 with enhanced AI features is most likely to be unveiled. But there might be some surprises too. Like the new Apple TV, an update of the tvOS, and an in-house Apple AI solution. Here’s what to expect from WWDC 2024.
What is WWDC?
WWDC stands for Worldwide Developers Conference. It’s an annual event Apple has organized since 1983 to announce big software and technological updates.
Before COVID, it used to take place only physically at various convention centers. But starting in 2020, WWDC adopted an online model. In 2022, Apple decided to make it hybrid with both online broadcast and offline event at Apple Park.
Since its inception, the Worldwide Developers Conference has been more of a social event than a mere keynote to announce big things. Targeted mostly at Apple developers, programmers, and brand fans, it came with get-togethers, practical labs, and talking sessions.
One of the coolest WWDC traditions was the Bash (aka Beer Bash). It was a sort of music festival with one famous headliner performing and plenty of street food and fun. Weezer, Panic! At The Disco, Good Charlotte, Bastille, Vampire Weekend, and other artists performed there over the years.
When is WWDC 2024?
WWDC 2024 takes place June 10 to 14, 2024.
It will be held online and in-person at Apple Park on June 10. The starting time is at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time on June 10.
How to get in-person tickets for WWDC 2024?
You could submit a request to take part in the Special event at Apple Park on the Apple Developers page, but the applications are now closed.
As in 2023, in 2024 Apple makes a limited selection of attendees for WWDC 2024. Also, Swift Student Challenge winners and current members Apple Developer Program are encouraged to take part.
How to watch WWDC 2024?
The whole event will be streamed on Apple.com. You can also watch WWDC 2024 using the Apple Developer website, the Apple Developer app, Apple TV, and YouTube.
Apple has also launched a dedicated Apple Developer YouTube channel. You will have a chance to see the developer sessions there and on the Apple Developer app.
What to expect from WWDC 2024?
Now we’re coming to the most interesting part. This year’s WWDC is Apple’s shot in the AI direction. The pavement was laid by April’s “Let loose” event where iPad Pro with M4 chip was introduced. Now WWDC is rumored to be the launching ground for Apple’s efforts in artificial intelligence.
WWDC 2024 is also a vital event for Apple’s repositioning and showing AI teeth to Google and OpenAI. The latter had a great year filled with generous press coverage and AI successes. Apple still hasn’t unveiled anything that could challenge OpenAI’s domination so WWDC 2024 is seen as the moment when Cupertino company strikes back.
iOS 18 takes the central stage
All eyes are on iOS 18. It is Apple’s weapon in a battle with OpenAI and Alphabet. And almost everyone is sure that WWDC 2024 will be heavily focused on showcasing the features of Apple’s newer OS version.
It was reported, that Apple has a special project incorporating the most vital AI features of the iOS 18. Mark Gurman wrote that it’s called “Project Greymatter” and it will run on-device. Thus the company will be able to give its users great AI tools that won’t be dependent on third-party servers.
The company is planning to update the iPhone home screen, deliver AI-enhanced notifications, bring customized emojis, and equip the new iOS with generative AI features.
Another big change comes to Siri. Apple’s assistant is rumored to get a comprehensive AI makeover with a more natural conversation flow based on Apple’s own large language models. We previously wrote about the Siri AI in detail.
Apart from iOS 18, Apple is probably going to announce other operating software updates such as:
– iPadOS 18
– watchOS 11
– macOS 15
– visionOS 2
– HomePod Software 18
What about the hardware announcements on WWDC 2024?
Apart from the software announcements, the hardware surprises may come too. Possibly, the focus will be on M3 chips, especially considering that with the M4 iPad Pro, the Mac Pros were left behind a little in terms of their chip power.
We’re almost sure that tvOS 18 will make an appearance at WWDC 2024. And this gives us hope that the new generation of Apple TV may be unveiled too. It was rumored that Apple plans to equip the updated Apple TVs with a FaceTime camera. Also, the company is focused on upgrading its Home line and introducing robot helpers.
Are the robots coming to WWDC 2024? Probably not. But Apple may hint at the software that can enable their operation and this alone is exciting to witness.
