There’s some relatable tech talk about the new Chromecast. It seems that Google is preparing a major update in 2024 and the streaming device is getting a big makeover. What’s also notable is that the new Chromecast may directly rival the Apple TV 4K. Here’s what we know.
The new Chromecast is a set-top box
It seems that Google is making drastic changes to the Chromecast. The reports from 9to5Google suggest that the company is working on a total refresh of their popular low-cost streaming device to give it a new look and updated specs.
If the rumors are true, Google will drop the Chromecast name altogether to present a device called “Google TV Streamer.” Instead of having a pill-reminiscent look, the new streamer will take inspiration from Apple TV 4K and come in the form of a visible box. Power and HDMI cables are located in the back of the device.
If the design remains this way, the new Chromecast might look like a smaller version of Google’s other product, the Google Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock. As for the remote, it will get longer but will retain its original features. Still, some important changes will be made such as a front volume rocker and a mute button.
It’s still unclear how much Google plans to change the specs. But from what we understand by looking at the “beefier” design compared to the Chromecast 2020 model, the Google TV streamer might get a better processor and more storage space to be able to directly compete with Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra.
Is there a new Apple TV 4K coming out in 2024?
While the new Chromecast is rumored to be released in 2024, what about the device it’s trying to compete with?
Well, the release date for the new Apple TV 4K remains a mystery. We previously reported that Apple might present the updated version of the streaming box in September during the Apple Event 2024. But it hasn’t been confirmed by the company.
With the recent pivot into Apple Intelligence and rumors of the FaceTime Camera addition to the device, the 4th generation of Apple TV might take some time to materialize. There is speculation that the Cupertino-based company is working on further integrating the streaming box into its updated Home products roster.
In any case, it will be exciting to see both the new Chromecast and the updated Apple TV later in 2024. One thing remains certain, Kitcast Blog will keep you posted.
